Skullcrack - The Ramblings of an Old, Insane Mage
The ramblings of someone who might have played one to many games of Magic in his life.
***A quick heads up to my style of formatting. I know that many people just read articles for deck lists, particular formats, and whatever other reasons they may have. Thusly, I have my articles broke into formats with headers and the deck lists front and center under the headers. Also, I list the topic I plan to cover at the start of my article. You may now rejoice!***
Topics: Ramblings, Standard
RAMBLINGS
I have started and quit magic more times than I care to admit. Since I recently restarted, and by recently I mean Innistrad block, in the back of my mind the question had already started lingering again, "When you going to quit?"A good question. But being the older wiser self that I currently am (no laughing in the peanut gallery, that includes my fellow writers), I knew this was something I need to analyze here and now, because if I was just going to quit again why even restart.
Being the insane person I am, I decided to have an internal (external would have made me look too crazy) conversation about this perplexing and potentially looming dilemma. I started with the hard questions. I asked myself the most important question of all, "Why do I play magic?" The one word answer: competition. I love competition. I absolutely get a kick out of testing myself against someone else. I mean it puts my adrenaline in overdrive and gets the juices flowing. I know why I play, then "Why do I quit?" Short answer: competition. Upon further introspection and conversation, I find that I get dismayed or frustrated at things where I want to compete, but don't feel like I can give my all to the competition, and as my Dad likes to say, "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right."
So the reason I play and the reason I quit are the same thing, I really am insane. Or maybe I just need something that I didn't have the times before, but I do have now, balance. I have learned to juggle the many requirements I have and in doing so I have since realized that there is never going to be a point in my life where I get to just focus on Magic and have nothing else to worry about, but I can, with planning, attend enough high level Magic to make it worth the time, investment, and effort to enjoy this fantastic hobby again. That and I had answered my own 'Desperate Ravings,' I knew what I needed to mentally prepare for, not being able to attend every event I want, but to just enjoy the events I am able to go to and not worry if I am ever going to prove myself 'good enough.' The point for everyone else: know why you play and what you want out of it. End Rant.
PS> My step brother mentioned to me the other day about getting back in and what he should focus on so that he can become the player he use to be. That my friends sounds like a good article for a future time.

STANDARD
Ok, now to the good stuff, or welcome if this is where you have decided to join us. I am very much a student of the game, due to the fact, that my limited testing schedule and overall limited amount of time prevents me from really brewing. I like to further develop decks that I find hidden in the top 32 of events. Everyone looks at the top 8 and many look at the top 16, but how many of you go even further down, looking for that stashed away jewel. Well, if you didn't, don't worry, I did and I found a doozy of a deck to check out.
One of my fellow writers this week advocated a BUG deck, which if you know him, means that something is terribly wrong with the world, probably a sign of some form of impending doom, but I digress. Or maybe, just maybe, he has his psychic antenna turned on and receiving. Anyways, someone call Eminem, I need a couple verses of "Without me."
BUG TEMPO
by Marsh Usary
19th Place @ SCG Open Atlanta
Maindeck:
Creatures (16)
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Mayor of Avabruck
4 Snapcaster Mage
Instants (24)
4 Abrupt Decay
3 Devour Flesh
4 Dimir Charm
2 Dispel
4 Simic Charm
4 Thought Scour
3 Ultimate Price
Basic Lands (3)
3 Islands
Lands (17)
4 Breeding Pool
3 Drowned Catacomb
1 Hinterland Harbor
4 Overgrown Tomb
4 Watery Grave
1 Woodland Cemetary
Sideboard:
4 Knight of Infamy
1 Devour Flesh
3 Essence Scatter
2 Golgari Charm
1 Negate
1 Ultimate Price
3 Duress
And why, you may ask, is this deck so special, because it is the return of a long lost friend (or nightmare), Delver of Secrets. This list is a fantastic starting point for our flying, insectile friend to make his return. I, however, might prefer white instead of the green that Mr. Usary choose. Just think about it, you get Azorius Charm, Orzhov Charm, and Dimir Charm and every mode contributes to the deck. But the real reason this list really got my heart pumping, Duskmantle Seer seems like it would be a perfect fit for this deck and/or decks of this style. Also, with white, you get to add back everyones favorite spirit, and boom we have time warped to last year. I think the deck should be a love child of fellow writer Eddie Walker's Spirits Deck that he top 8'd SCG Atlanta with and Mr. Usary's deck. In fact, next testing session is going to be all about testing this deck. Don't worry, I'll let you know how it goes.
