Deconstruct - Oct 17th 2012

Gentleman, I hope you had fun last weekend at States and SCG Providence.  Now for some info:

Archetypes Last Week SCG Providence Expected Meta
Zombies 33.90% 17.00% 25.50%
UW/UWr Control 16.10% 17.00% 16.60%
Jund 12.50% 19.10% 15.80%
Reanimator 12.50% 10.60% 11.60%
Tokens 0.00% 17.00% 8.50%
G/W Aggro 8.90% 4.30% 6.60%
G/W Ramp 12.50% 0.00% 6.30%
U/W Humans 5.40% 6.40% 6.00%
Bant Control 7.10% 4.30% 5.70%
U/R Tempo 5.40% 0.00% 2.70%
Mono-Red 0.00% 4.30% 2.20%

First off, I want to thank Patrick Chapin as he actually compiled this info.  The info is very relevant as you can see the shift in the metagame.  G/W Ramp has dropped off the radar and Tokens showed up heavy.  Zombies dropped by half.

So what should you expect at SCG Indy this weekend?  The expected % column gives the decks that you should reasonably see: Zombies, UWx Control, Jund, Reanimator.  In other words, play test against those if you plan on going.

States saw an interesting set of decks.  This is the current Top 8 frequency:

Bant Control (29)
Jund Midrange (29)
American Control (23)
BR Zombies (20)
Selesnya Midrange (20)
Bant Midrange (14)
Azorius Aggro (13)
Junk Rites (11)
4C Rites (10)
Azorius Control (8)
Rakdos Aggro (8)
Esper Control (7)
BG Zombies (7)
Naya Midrange (7)
Selesnya Aggro (7)
Jund Zombies (6)
Bant Aggro (4)
Esper Tokens (4)
Grixis Control (4)
Junk Tokens (4)

This data does not cover every State Championship as all of that data has not become available yet.  With this info, it looks like there are more control decks in the future.

Be prepared for these matchups.  The reason Junk Tokens won at Providence was simple:

  • Opponents didn't expect to see tokens do well so they probably didn't playtest the matchup
  • Marc Blesso designed his deck to beat what he expected would be the top decks and also designed it to be reliant enough against Zombies before boarding that he would do well against the field.
  • While opponents had cards which were good against Tokens in general, Marc Blesso had a backup plan to win those games.
